Different Writing Styles for Different Needs

When it comes to writing professionally, there are several different writing styles to choose from. I make most of my money as a freelance blog writer, but I also work on web content, technical writing, email marketing, article advertising, and much more. If you can get a clear understanding of the different writing styles you will have to work with as a freelance writer, you will be able to make a lot more money because of your versatility. Here is an overview of some of the different writing styles you may come across, along with some tips on how to write for each one of them.

Blog Writing

Blog writing is very informal, much like what you will find around here. It’s meant to be conversational, like you are talking directly to your audience. You can throw in slang words, emoticons, funny spelling, and whatever else you want because it’s your blog. You’re allowed to get creative. In fact, people usually respond better to informal, funny writing than they do to stiff, informative writing. You can convey facts without sounding like you have a stick up your ass. Ya, I said it. I’m not taking it back either ;)

Technical Writing

Technical writing is completely different than blog writing. It is a style that requires complete formality. In this style of writing, you may discuss the software engineering process or a medical procedure for a professional journal. You have to use terminology that is specific to the industry you are writing for, and you have to stylize your writing to reflect a more intelligent audience than normal. If you can master the art of technical writing, you can actually make a lot of money with it. I just prefer other writing styles because they are more accustomed to my natural way with words.

Article Writing

Article writing usually involves the use of keywords that are meant to promote a website online. For instance, let’s say that I have a client that runs an online shoe store. I may write articles with keywords like “online shoe store” and “buy shoes online” to help him promote his business. Internet marketers use these articles on directories like Ezine to draw in customers around the web. The style of writing that you have to use for an article will depend on the article’s contents. Every project is a little different, and so is every client.

Guide Writing

Writing how to articles is not as easy to do as you may think. You have to write an article like this in a way that addresses every step taken in a process and still remains concise enough for people to quickly reference. The tone can be whatever you want to be, but the style needs to be exactly like an instruction manual. You have to show every step of whatever it is you are doing, and you have to write about it in a way that people understand. This is not always easy, especially if you have trouble thinking linearly.

Web Content Writing

You will most likely be asked to write content for a website at one point or another. This is a lot like article writing in the sense that it will probably require you to use keywords to help sites show up better in search engines. The tone that you use in the writing will depend on the site you are trying to write for. Some need conversational tones, and others need formal, informative tones. Take the time to learn about this and other style of writing, and you will be a truly versatile employee in no time.

How Article Spinning Works

Article spinning is a unique part of article writing that uses multiple versions of the same word or phrase to create hundreds of versions of the same article. The piece is written in a unique way so that a spinning program will choose one option of the word or phrase to use for every output. The more spun an article is, the more options it can generate through the spinning program. If you ever decide to make a career out of writing online, you will probably come across the process of article spinning. If you get good at it, you may even be able to make some decent money spinning for a living. Here is a look at how the process works so you can get started in it.

How to Spin an Article

You can either choose to spin an article by hand or to spin it with the help of a spinning program. Spinning programs simplify the process, so I’ll just explain how to do this the long way. In order to spin an article, you will need to learn something called spintax. That is when you put brackets and dividing lines around a word, sentence, or paragraph you want to spin to add other versions to it. This would look something like…

{option 1|option 2|option 3}

If you put that in a sentence, it may look something like this…

I like {article spinning|to spin articles|using spintax}.

That sentence could then go into a spinning program to produce three different versions of the same sentence. Those would be…

  1. I like article spinning.
  2. I like to spin articles.
  3. I like using spintax.

As you can see, the program responded to the spintax and generated several options as a result. Clients pay to have this done throughout an article so that they can get as much out of one set of information as possible. If you can master article spinning at a complex level, you can make good money at it in the end.

What Spinning Really Looks Like

You can’t really get a feel for spinning with one sentence. You need to see a whole paragraph to understand it. Here is something that I spun a long long long time ago that may illustrate just that:

{{No matter|It {doesn’t|does not|doesnt} matter} what {the room or {occasion|event|function}|space or {occasion|event|function}|room or {occasion|event|function}}, candles can {fit the bill|suit the case|be a solution}|No matter the {room|space} or {event|occasion|function}, candles can be used for {anything|everything|it all}.|Candles can {fit the bill|fill the bill|work} for any {occasion|event|function}}. {{They’re|They are|Theyre} nothing more than a wick on top of whatever {emotion|feeling|mood} you choose.|Candles are {just|simply|merely} wicks attached to {emotions|feelings|moods}, and you get to {choose|decide|determine} what they feel like.|Candles are {nothing more than|just|simply} {manifestations|expressions|reflections} of personal {emotions|feelings}. What {are you feeling|do you feel} like?}

That is just a small blurb from a small article. Think about what this mess looks like when you start getting multiple paragraphs all spun around together. It can turn a simple article into a complex nightmare really quickly, but the process of actually spinning it is not nearly as bad as it looks.

If you have not tried article spinning yet, you may want to now. It could make a big difference in your job opportunities in the future. If you have a talent for this process and you learn how to tap into that, there is no reason why you couldn’t make close to a CIA agent salary at the end of the day. Give it a try and see for yourself.
